Stranraer Weekend

Friday Nov 6th to Suday Nov 8th 2015

12 Bearsden curlers and two supporters ( see photo page) arrived in Stranraer on the friday afternoon after an excellent lunch at Soutar Johnnies in Kirkoswald on the way down.

Unfortunatly none of the teams achieved the semi final but the w/e was enjoyed by all  - wonderful company, great craic, fun dancing and good food. Thanks to convenor Norma for all the organisation.

Prague Weekend 24th/28th Oct 2013

Seventeen intrepid Curlers met at Edinburgh Airport before dawn on 24th Oct and set out for the historic City of Prague.  Not entirely believing the forecasts some of has taken winter clothes but we stepped out into balmy late summer weather which lasted all weekend. 20c  and sunshine is very unusual for this time of year but had been specially requested by the organisers!

After a smooth transfer we arrived at our Hotel in central Prague beside the famous Charles Bridge

(Prague’s equivalent of the Royal Mile). After settling in we all rushed over the bridge to catch the canal boat trip for our introduction to Prague which left slightly late after a flurry of free drinks and nibbles.

Back to our rooms to relax and change for our pre dinner welcome drink of Becherovka on the roof balcony – obviously a acquired taste!!  The welcome dinner was excellent and we all retired early to bed.

After breakfast on Friday the pre- planned route saw our crocodile transfer smoothly from Hotel to Ice Rink in under 40mins using Tram and Metro. We arrived very early and got on the ice at 10am to meet our opposition.  Jack Steven had organised the rinks with two teams playing against Czech opposition and Bearsden v  Bearsden on the 3rd sheet.

Rotzly is the only curling ice rink in Czech Republic and has about 500 curlers in total, ranging in age from very young to early 60’s. We had arranged through the ice rink to play local teams and they got  Karl the national Coach  to arrange it. When we got on the ice we discovered that Karl had decided to use it as a training session for the  National Squads!  The Stevens and Scotts played the men skipped by  Karl and the Camerons and Veitchs played much the same ladies team that BCC had sponsored at the Glynhill  in January. On very straight ice the results were somewhat inevitable but everyone had a good time especially Neil and Brian surrounded by all the good looking girls!

After a quick lunch at the ice rink we were back on the ice against slighty changed opposition, this time BCC fielded men against the men and ladies against the ladies.  The result was the same as in the morning,  but closer!

The “crocodile” got back to the hotel with only temporary loss of part of it’s tail! Everyone was then at liberty to explore the city for the next two days.  After a surprise birthday party for our secretary, with cake and fizzy plonk, some went on a Jazz Dinner Cruise on the river, some went to the Puppet Theatre and some enjoyed fine dining.

We had a prearranged guided night tour on Saturday  which everyone decided to come on and we spent three hours walking on the cobbled streets  before dinner.

Sunday evening saw us back on the balcony for some local sparkling wine before going downstairs for our boisterous farewell dinner.

On Monday we were back on the ice at 10am for Bearsden mini bonspiel and back to the hotel for a relaxed lunch until the coach came to take us to the airport. We were back on home soil at 7.45pm.

The hotel Pod Vezi  was small and quirky, very central for all sights and transport  and every member of staff did their very best to look after us and make us feel at home.  It seems everyone who went is keen to go on another tour.
