Reports Season 2018-19 (updated 6/03/19)

Last game of the Season is Spiers on March 25th

  • Club Competitions.  For this season we booked 136 sheets of ice for Club competitions and inter club games.  For club competitions there is a roughly equal split of early and late games - 48% of games are early (6.00pm or earlier). With two games remaining in the Speirs, our main club competition there are only 3 points separating the top two teams.  The Firth Medal was won by Eilidh Crawford's Rink B and the Rink Medal by Ian Strathdee's Rink A.

  • Try Curling and practice sessions. Details are available form Intu Braehead.  Sesssion on 20th Feb attracted 5 interested curlers.

  • Coaching/Practice Session - 19th September  Details will be provided by Intu Braehead shortly.  Free ice 18.00-20.00.  Interested members or prospective members should contact the club secretary (refer home page).

  • Braehead Open, 21-23 Sept -- Cancelled.

  • Allan Cup, first game v Partick on 28th September

  • David Duncan, first game v Giffnock on 3rd October 

  • MacKenzie Trophy, 8th November, Thursday 5.30pm.  Challenge against Crossmyloof CC.  Won by Brearsden.  Bearsden have now won the trophy 16 times against 20 wins by Crossmyloof. 

  • Christmas Bonspiel, 8th December 2018, Greenacres.  Enjoyable day with 3 sheets of ice.

  • Pitlochry Weekend, 18-20 January 2019.  

  • Bearsden Challenge, series of 9 matches with Bearsden Ski Club starting on 23rd Jan and finishing 20th March. With two games remaining BCC have won one, peeled on ne and lost five

  • 2011 Centenary Bonspiel, 10th February.  Annual Bonspeil for Curling Clubs that celebrated their centenary in 2011. Won for the first time by Bearsden.

  • Ladies v Gents,  23rd February 2019, Greenacres.  .

  • Kinross Weekend, Had to be re-arranged at Stranrear due to unavailable ice at Kinross!! 1st - 3rd March,2019. 

  • Brechin & Allcomers Trophies,  3rd March, 2019. 

  • Pairs, 17th March 2019

  • Braehead Closing Bonspiel - 28th March  

  • AGMFriday 26th April 2019 - 6.30 for 7.00pm start.  Venue - Douglas Park GC.


Protective Headgear


Websites for suppliers of sports protective headgear.  Not all are specifically for curling.  Some are also used for skating or soccer.

MacKenzie Crook.  This Braehead Seniors competition was won for the second year running by the Cameron Rink comprising Eileen cameron, Neil Cameron, Ian Strathdee and Ross Barr.

Kirkwood Cup.  Despite both Bearsden teams having good wins they were beaten into second place by Cadder who were one more shot up and had one more end.

Reports Season 2017-18

News and What’sOn (updated 18 Jan. 2018)

  • Club Competitions.  For this season we booked 141 sheets of ice for Club competitions and inter club games.  For club competitions there is a roughly equal split of early and late games - 52% of games are early (6.00pm or earlier).We are now at the end of the season with most of our trophies decided.  However, there are still two league games in the Spiers and Rink H could still be caught.  Only 3 points separate second and fifth.

  • Try Curling and practice sessions.  Intu Braehead provide practice ice between 4.30 and 5.30 on weekdays.  There are a number of Sweep sessions still avaialbale before the end of the season.  Details of 'Try Curling sessions, 'Sweep' sessions and Cur, Coffee and Cake sessions can be found at or contact Ross Barr.

  • MacKenzie Trophy, 9th November, Thursday 5.30pm.  Challenge against Crossmyloof CC.  Bearsden retained the trophy!!

  • David Duncan, After loosing the two opening games we had a turn of form winning the subsequent two games and unfortunately we lost our last game against Partick.    

  • Allan Cup,  We were second in the Group stage winning five games and losing one (to Alma the defending champions). Lost in semi-final to Kelvinside.

  • Pitlochry Weekend, 18-21 January 2018.  Once again, another exciting programme for the weekend  - full report for the 2017 weekend under the 'Curling Weekends' tab.    

  • Bearsden Challenge, series of 9 matches with Bearsden Ski Club starting on 24th Jan and finishing 21st March. Details from Iain MacVoy.

  • Points Competition, 4th February 2018.  

  • Ladies v Gents,  24th February 2018, Greenacres.  Gents retain the Centenary Medal - photo below.

  • Kinross Weekend, 2nd - 4th March,2018. Regretfully this fun weekend had to be cancelled due to the adverse weather. 

  • Brechin & Allcomers Trophies,  4th March, 2018. Also cancelled due to the heavy snow.

Pairs Winners - Ian Strathdee and Alice Graham. Well Done! This was a joint competition with the bearsden Ski Club

Pairs, November - .  Ian and Alice won on 5th end after peels on 4th end. Two skips stones played and measured on 5th end. Ian and Alice won by 4 inches) Runner up: Peter Hardern and David Graham jnr ( man of match).

World Mixed Curling Championships, Switzerland, October - Jacqui Davidson and Ross Barr (both centre) represented Ireland in this 37 nation competition.  Winning 4 of 7 round robin games were ranked 4th in thier group of 8 (three qualified to the knock out stage) and 23rd overall.

The New Season.  Our 2017-18 curling season opened on 21 September with two games in the Province Cuthbert Cup.  The BCC rinks played Cadder with a win and a loss. All at the club wish Valerie Browning a speedy return to full fitness and look forward to seeing her on the ice again soon.

Speirs and Centenary Trophies

Kinross Bonspiel 5 March.  Five Bearsden rinks competed this season. The Rink skipped by Simon Blyth, ably supported by Valerie Browning and Campbell Denholm,  went all the way to the final and narrowly lost out to the lacal 'Barton' rink. Check out the Photos page!

Braehead Allcomers Trophy 5 March.

Margarita Sweeney Baird, Alison and Ross Barr were in the winning rink, skipped by Bill Gray (second from left).  Bill is a World Senior Curling Champion, playing for Ireland in 2012.

Ladies v Gents 25th Feb 2017.  President Simon with the two team captains.  The four ladies rinks were captained by Valerie Browning and the Gents were captained by John Macfarlane. For the second year in succession the Gents came out on top, retaining the Centenary Medal.  Use the 'photos' tab to see the Medal presentation.

The Broadway Trophy Winners 2017.  The Bearsden Ladies team of Anne Reid, Joan MacVoy, Valerie Browning (skip) and Valerie Veitch won a tense final against the ladies of 69CC1.  Skips shook hands during the final end with BCC 6 - 3 up and lying 2.

Points Competition 5th Feb 2017.  Once again this was a competition run jointly with the Ski Club. The joint Bearsden CC winners were Norma Steven and Peter Harden.  Peter Harden also won the Ski Club trophy. President Simon and Convenor Elaine are shown here presenting the David Murray Trophy to Peter and Norma.

Four Nations Weekend, Greenacres 29th Jan.    Five Bearsden CC members played for their respective national curling associations. Brian and Valerie Veitch (Scotland), Alison Barr (England), Jacqui Davidson and Ross Barr (Ireland). Ireland won the Grand Slam, for the fourth time and the second year running!  The full M&B Herald report under 'Newsletters' tab.

Pitlochry Weekend, 20-22 Jan 2017. The Famous Grouse Trophy was competed by eight teams.  The winning rink was Iain Sim (skip), Norman Smith, Janice McIntyre and Magda Scott.  Pictured are Norman and Janice being presented with the trophy by Hugh McLean, the 2016 winning skip.  The weekend also featured a putting competitio, quizzes, a woodland walk and a ceilidh.  Check out the 'Photos' page!

Glynhill Ladies International, 19-22 Jan 2017. The Norwegian Skaslien Rink, sponsored by Bearsden CC. President Simon presented the ladies,Kristin Skaslien, Anneline Skaarsmoen, Julie Kjaer Molnar and Kristine Davanger each with an exclusive Ailsa Craig Granite coaster and a BCC badge. The competition was won by Team Muirhead, Scotland, who defeated the Swiss Team, Paetz, 8-3 in the Final.

Christmas Bonspiel

Pairs Competition Dec 2016. Report published in the Milngave & Bearsden Herald, Thursday 19 January 2017.

Pairs, December.  This was a joint BCC/Ski Club competition with 11 teams playing in 2 round robin sections.  Simon Blyth and Alison Barr came through top of Section A while Bill Masterton and Iain Reekie won Section B.  In a close final Bill and Ian maintained their form to lift the trophy.  Pictured are Bill and Ian, front and right respectively, with our President and VP arm in arm back left.

World Mixed Curling Championships, October.

Three members of Bearsden Curling Club represented Ireland in the world championships in Kazan, Russia.  Jacqui Davidson, Ross Barr and Margarita Sweeney Baird (with skip Bill Gray) had an unforgetable experience and finished in a creditable 23rd place in the competition with 37 nations.  M&B Herald report under 'Newsletters' tab.

Opening Bonspiel, 9th September.  Once again BCC entered two Rinks.  Bearsden A - Ian Strathdee, Jack Steven, Ann Livingston and Campbell Denholm.  Rink B, (pictured) - Ross Barr, Margarita Sweeney-Baird, Alison Barr and Jacqui Barr.  Curling was good fun.  However the raffle provided more tangible results.

David Duncan Cup.  Sept 7th. Bearsden, skipped by Simon Blyth, made a winning start against Drystanes.
